Brain size gets smaller from insomnia

Specialists at the University of Cambridge believe that insomnia negatively affects the human brain, reducing its size. Scientists have found that lack of sleep and poor quality of sleep reduces the potential for human motivation, which in turn can manifest itself in the inability to make decisions.

During the study, experts compared the brain of people suffering from insomnia and the brain of healthy people who do not suffer from sleep pathologies. Despite the length of the period when people suffered from insomnia, this sleep disorder had an extremely negative effect on brain activity. In particular, the density of gray matter was reduced. However, experts still cannot give a clear answer: is it really insomnia that actually leads to the loss of gray matter? During the experiment, brain activity was assessed only in elderly people.

Doctors dealing with sleep pathologies know that insomnia upsets brain functions, but the goal of the latest study was to establish the mechanism for the development of these disorders. The study proved that insomnia is not just an unpleasant phenomenon, but also a pathological danger in terms of human neurological health. It is known that almost every form of mental disorder affecting the state of Sergo substance occurs accompanied by sleep pathologies.
